What is a Rainbow?
Children are fascinated by rainbows, and there’s nothing more magical than seeing an arc of beautiful colors appear in the sky! A rainbow is a multi-colored arc that forms in the sky when sunlight shines through water. The light reflects off the droplets of water, bends (refracts) and splits into seven colors.
The seven colors of the rainbow are:
- Red
- Orange
- Yellow
- Green
- Blue
- Indigo
- Violet
There are a couple of fun phrases that can help children to remember the order of the colors in a rainbow. The first letter of each word represents the first letter of each color:

Rainbows can be seen as a sign of hope, diversity and a better future. During the coronavirus lockdown in the UK children made rainbow pictures and displayed them in their windows so that other people could count them.
Some fun facts you might not know about rainbows:
- Rainbows don’t just happen in the sky – they can occur anywhere there’s water, such as waterfall or even a spray from a garden tap!
- Did you know that the moon can also make rainbows, known as moonbows? They’re not as bright as a rainbow formed by the sun, but just as magical.
- There is a legend from Ireland that there’s a pot of gold at the end of every rainbow, guarded by a leprechaun!
Have you ever seen a double rainbow? These happen when light is reflected twice in a raindrop.
To see a rainbow, the water has to be in front you, and the sun behind you.
