Rebus puzzles may look slightly confusing if you’ve never attempted one before, so see below for an explanation of how to solve them.
Rebus Examples
If you’re new to rebus puzzles or simply need a little refresher then we’re happy to help.
There are two different rebus examples just to the right. Can you figure out what their answers might be?
What you have to do is really look at what is in the image, or what is happening within the image, and consider how these things may point you towards a famous word or phrase.
So take the first example here. What does it show?
An arrow that points down.
And an image of a number of houses. This could show a village, a town, a city.
Then you must try and piece these clues together to find the rebus solution. The first part of this word is likely ‘down’, and the only thing that would make sense would be pairing it with ‘town’. So there’s your answer – downtown!
Let’s try again.
What does this second image show?
A pot of honey
And an image of a comb, or a hairbrush.
In piecing these clues together you get… the word honeycomb!
It’s that simple, you just have to think of things differently – you must think outside of the box, think of things literally, or just play around with the different words that come to your mind.
Here are a few other tips to help you solve a rebus puzzle:
1. Look at the puzzle carefully – You must analyse each part of the puzzle, looking at it’s colour, shape, or the position of it compared to other clues in the puzzle. It’s a type of visual word puzzle.
2. Break it down – sometimes the puzzle can look complex at first glance, so take a minute to consider and solve each part of it separately and this may help you figure it out. Think of them like rebus riddles!
3. Word association – Consider the letters or images that you find in the puzzle, and think about if they remind you of other words or phrases that they look or sound like. Think of these ones like rebus word puzzles.
4. Check for homonyms – these are words that sound the same but are spelled differently. A common one of these found in rebus puzzles is ‘i’ and ‘eye.
5. It’s often helpful to sound out the clues out loud – it can help you realise things you might be missing!
