How to Play Who Wants to Be a Millionaire
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire is a classic show and game concept. But it might not be familiar to people of all ages, and some may need a little reminder. If you fall into one of these categories, we’ve helpfully laid out the steps to play this game below.
Step 1: Prepare Your Materials
Make sure you have prepared some of the question sheets and answer sheets.
Either print them out or have them on a device you can read from.
Step 2: Choose a Host
Decide who will act as the host — the person who reads the questions and keeps track of the answers.
People can take turns being the host if you have lots of volunteers.
Hosting can be great fun and lets you practice your dramatic flair for serious question reading and long pauses!
Step 3: Pick a Contestant
Choose your contestant. Traditionally it’s one person, but there are many ways to play at home:
Each person can have one full turn answering all questions.
Take turns answering one question at a time.
Make teams, especially if you have lots of little ones playing!
Step 4: Start the Game
The host reads each question and the multiple-choice answers out loud.
The contestant then figures out and chooses the correct answer.
Optional: Use Lifelines
If you want, you can introduce lifelines! These can be used once per contestant:
50/50: Remove two incorrect answers, leaving only one wrong answer and the correct one.
Phone a Friend: The contestant asks someone for help answering the question.
Ask the Audience: If playing with a group, the contestant asks the others for their opinion, and everyone votes.
Step 5: Winning and Prizes
Each correct answer moves the contestant up the question ladder.
Assign prizes to money values for extra excitement, such as:
Candy or chocolate
Bragging rights
Skipping a chore
Picking dinner
If a contestant answers incorrectly, their turn is over, and the next person steps up!
Goal of the Game
The aim is simple: Try to win the million dollars!
